BERKELEY, Calif. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team came up short against No. 6 California, falling by a score of 130-113 on Saturday (Jan. 6) at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. With the loss, the Wolverines drop to 1-4 on the season, although each loss has come against a top 10 nationally ranked team.
After California won the opening race, Michigan responded with two consecutive first-place finishes for an early advantage. Yet California responded by taking five of the next six races to take control and hold on for the victory.
U-M had six individual first-place finishers, led by senior captain and NCAA Honorable Mention All-American Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS), who turned in two first-place performances. Werner clocked in at 1:51.59 in the 200-yard individual medley, and later captured the 200-yard breaststroke with an NCAA consideration time of 2:01.49.
Michigan dominated in the distance freestyles, posting 1-2-3 finishes in both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles. Two-time NCAA national champion Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) won the 1,000, finishing in 9:14.07, and 2000 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) and sophomore Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy [Pa.]) led the charge in the 500 as each finished in an NCAA consideration time of 4:27.92. Mangieri also placed first in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at 1:37.42, also an NCAA consideration time.
Freshman diver Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Maple Newtown HS) continued his strong performance thus far this season as he won the three-meter springboard with an NCAA zone diving qualifying mark of 317.40. He also added a second-place performance on the one-meter board (279.45).
U-M has one week off from competition before starting its Big Ten Conference schedule at home against Penn State on Friday, Jan. 19, at Canham Natatorium. The meet begins at 6 p.m.
