BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore Dana Chapman (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg HS) more than doubled her previous career high in kills to help the University of Michigan volleyball team pull out a 3-2 (30-25, 28-30, 30-28, 28-30, 15-11) victory over Indiana tonight (Saturday, Oct. 13) in front of 614 fans at University Gym. Chapman finished off 23 of 38 attempts for a .526 attack percentage, blowing away her previous career high of nine kills.
In one of the closest matches of the year, the Wolverines won games one, three and five to move into fourth place in the Big Ten Conference standings with a 5-3 league record.
Also shining for the Wolverines was sophomore Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS), who recorded 16 digs to tie her career high, which she set the previous night at Illinois. Moore also posted five blocks against the Hoosiers. Freshman Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) extended her streak of double-doubles as she tallied 11 kills and 11 digs. She has accomplished the feat in eight consecutive matches and in 10 of the last 12 outings.
Indiana (4-12, 1-7 Big Ten) and Michigan each struggled early, combining for 41 attack errors in the first two games. For the Wolverines, much of the trouble presented itself at the net, as the Hoosiers posted 20.5 blocks compared to U-M's seven in the match.
In the game one, Michigan (9-6, 5-3 Big Ten) jumped out to a 7-4 lead on two kills by Katrina Lehman (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Marian HS) and a service ace by senior setter Shannon Melka (Wheaton, Ill./St. Francis HS). Indiana clawed back and took a 10-9 lead, but the Wolverines regained the lead and stretch it to 17-13 after four attack errors by the Hoosiers and a kill by Lehman. Michigan held onto the lead and won the game 30-25.
In game two, Michigan jumped out to another early lead at 8-3, but Indiana closed the gap to one point at 12-11 after three attack errors by the Wolverines. Michigan let the Hoosiers stay in the game and tie the score at 20-20 after three more attack errors. With the momentum shifting, Indiana recorded a kill and service ace to take a 27-23 lead on the way to a 30-28 win.
Game three was close the entire way, as each team hit .211 (15-7-38) and neither was able to take more than a three-point lead in the game. The Wolverines and Hoosiers traded leads until the game was tied at 22-22. The match stayed close and was still tied at 28-28. At that point, a pair of errors by the Hoosiers gave Michigan a 30-28 win and 2-1 games lead in the match.
Indiana jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in game four and extended the lead to 12-5 after two U-M errors and two IU kills. Michigan get back into the game at 22-20 and tied the score at 25-25 after two kills by Chapman. However, Indiana regained the lead and won the game 30-28 to force game five.
Chapman helped the Wolverines take a 3-2 lead in game five. Michigan extended the lead to 9-4 after a kill by Lehman. At that point, Michigan maintained the lead and won the game 15-11. In the game, Michigan used its best hitting of the evening (.368, 10-3-19) to take the match 3-2.
The Wolverines head home for one of the biggest weekends of the season. On Friday (Oct. 19), 10th-ranked Ohio State visits Cliff Keen Arena at 7 p.m. To close out the weekend, No. 11 Penn State visits at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 20).
