ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team won its sixth consecutive game at home with a 1-0 victory over Purdue University Sunday (Oct. 14) at the U-M Soccer Field.
The game's only goal, 63:42 into the game, was accidentally headed into the Purdue net by Boilermaker Jenna Silverman, who was trying to deflect an Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) corner kick. The goal represented the first time all season that not a single point was recorded by either team, because no point is awarded to the offensive team on such a goal.
The weather was bad as rain and high winds only escalated as time progressed. The field became a quagmire that proved as much of an opponent to the Wolverines as the Boilermakers did. Many passes came to a muddy halt before they could reach their intended targets and the two teams were unable to get a good footing.
Michigan appeared likely to score in the first few minutes of the game, when Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) sneaked passed two defenders for a breakaway but she led herself with a dribble too far ahead and could only muster a weak shot as the Boilermaker goalie cut down any good angle to shoot. Two minutes later Michigan had three more great opportunities to score when they had three consecutive point-blank shots but were unable to beat Purdue goaltender Elizabeth Boldt.
Purdue's offense was never able to develop a rhythm because of the relentless play of Michigan's defense. Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) played out of position at the sweeper spot as Michigan's last line of defense. However, because the other Maize and Blue defenders routinely beat the Boilermakers to the ball, Williamson and goalie Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School), who made four saves for her sixth solo shutout of the season, did not face an onslaught of scoring chances. Purdue managed just seven shots on goal.
U-M (8-5, 6-2 Big Ten) completes its three-game Big Ten homestand with a match Friday (Oct. 19) against Minnesota at 4 p.m. before traveling to Rochester, Mich., to play Oakland University Sunday (Oct. 21) at 1 p.m.
