Bickett Earns Gold at Junior Pan-Am Championships

SANTA FE, Argentina -- Sophomore Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team recently won a gold medal in the discus for Team USA at the 12th Junior Pan-American Championships (Oct. 18).
Bickett's winning throw of 49.36 meters (161-11) was over 10 feet better than the second-place mark of 46.06m (151-2). Bickett recorded four of her six throws over 48.00m.

Last season Bickett finished 18th in the discus at the NCAA Championships (May 30-June 2) with a throw of 140-5 and took third at the 2001 Big Ten Outdoor Championships (May 18-20) with a toss of 171-3, helping U-M finish in fourth place.
"Wolverine Sports Magazine," airing twice this week on FOX Sports Detroit with host Doug Karsch, will do a feature on Bickett. The first show will air on Thursday (Oct. 25) at 7 p.m., with a repeat airing on Friday (Oct. 26) at 12:30 p.m.
The U-M women's track and field team kicks off the indoor season with a non-scoring home meet on Jan. 5, 2002.
