MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- A Dartmouth College goal with under five minutes to play broke a scoreless tie and led to a 1-0 Big Green victory over the No. 20-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team Sunday (Nov. 18) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Marquette's Valley Fields.
The first half of play saw few scoring opportunities for both teams. Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) had the best chance for U-M as she headed a pass on net off a corner kick. Dartmouth goalkeeper Julia Shields jumped to get a hand on the ball and keep the score at 0-0. The shot was one of Michigan's three in the first half.
Kleinholz was in on Michigan's second big chance of the game as she kicked a pass from the left side up the middle for Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS), who had split the defenders for an open shot on net. Sullivant's shot, which she kicked over the goalkeeper's head, hit the far post.
Dartmouth's Mary McVeigh scored the game-winner with 4:32 remaining after getting to a loose ball inside the box. The Wolverines battled through the last few minutes of play but were unable to get another shot off.
Michigan, which has made five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, finished the 2001 season with a 13-8-1 record and placed second in the Big Ten Conference regular season with an 8-2 mark.
Dartmouth advances to the NCAA third round to face No. 2 seed Santa Clara, which defeated Syracuse 4-1 in the second round Sunday in Champaign, Ill.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On Dartmouth's play ... "They aren't a fancy team really, but they capitalized on their chances. They have big midfielders, so we knew that play in the midfield was going to be won in the air. We needed to get the ball to the outside more, but we didn't."
On the team's performance ... "I am very disappointed. We played hard, but didn't take advantage of our opportunities. We didn't get the ball to Abby Crumpton enough and we didn't get the ball to the outside enough."
Junior Midfielder Michele Pesiri
On her team's play ... "It is very disappointing to lose, but I am proud of how my teammates played. It was a close game. We hit a post and they hit a post. Their goal wasn't all that spectacular. They were just in the right place at the right time."

Junior forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS), Michigan's leading scorer, was held without a shot. Crumpton entered the contest with a six-game scoring streak, having netted seven goals in the previous six outings.
Dartmouth is just the second team this season to shut out the Wolverines. U-M battled Oakland to a 0-0, double-overtime tie on Oct. 21 in Rochester, Mich.
