COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Despite being outshot 16-4, the University of Michigan men's soccer team defeated No. 14-ranked Ohio State 1-0 on Friday night (Nov. 2) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium to earn the program's first-ever victory over a ranked opponent. Freshman midfielder Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) scored the lone goal 7:48 into the game when he placed the ball in the lower left corner of the net from eight yards out.
With the win, Michigan improves its season record to 9-6-1 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten Conference while Ohio State falls to 10-4-2 and 1-3-1. The Wolverines finish in a tie for third place in the Big Ten standings and will be either the No. 4 or 5 seed in the Big Ten Championship on Nov. 8-11 in Madison, Wis.
Playing in his hometown and making his second career start in goal, freshman goalkeeper Bryan Lau (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) converted all four save opportunities to preserve Michigan's fifth shutout of the year. Lau earned his second career victory, as he also was manning the goal in a 2-1 win over Wisconsin on Oct. 21.
The goal by Cameron is his fourth on the season, which ranks second on the team to junior Jody Keeling (Odessa, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory), who owns five tallies on the year. The total by Cameron also ties Tom Gritter (2000) for second place on U-M's list for goals scored in a season.
Friday's game also took a physical tone with the two teams combining for 42 fouls and eight cards, including a red card on Michigan junior James Baez-Silva (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica HS) at the 60:28 mark.
The Wolverines (9-6-1, 3-3 Big Ten) will play the 1:30 p.m. CST game in the first round of the Big Ten Championship on Thursday (Nov. 8) in Madison, Wis. U-M will face the winner of Sunday's (Nov. 4) regular-season finale between Wisconsin and Ohio State.
