
Elmquist Brace Propels Michigan Over Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team knocked off rival Ohio State 3-1 on Tuesday night (Oct. 14) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Grayson Elmquist scored two goals in the win, the first brace of his tenure at Michigan, and is now tied for the team lead with four. Michael Ramirez opened the scoring before assisting on Elmquist's first goal of the contest. Nicholas Cassiday, Duilio Herrera and Joao Paulo Ramos each tallied an assist in the strong team performance.
The Wolverines controlled the match from start to finish and outpaced the Buckeyes 7-3 in shots on target.
Michigan (7-2-3, 3-2-1 Big Ten) applied pressure early in the match as Elmquist launched a shot that required a save from the Ohio State keeper in the eighth minute. Cassiday added another on-target attempt in the 18th minute.
U-M found the breakthrough in the 30th minute as Ramos found Ramirez with a long pass to the left side of the box, and Ramirez fired a low line drive into the bottom corner of the net to give Michigan the lead, 1-0.
The Maize and Blue quickly added another as Ramirez found Elmquist streaking down the middle of the pitch. Elmquist got on the end of the pass and beat the Buckeye goalkeeper to double the Michigan lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute.
Elmquist added his second goal of the evening in the 67th minute as Cassiday and Herrera combined to find the sophomore striker, who used his right boot to poke the ball into the back of the net to put Michigan up 3-0 in Columbus.
Ohio State (5-7-0, 2-4-0 Big Ten) pulled one goal back in the 76th minute as Aaron Hurge found the back of the net to make the score 3-1 in favor of Michigan.
U-M responded with stout defense and did not allow any more chances from OSU as the Wolverines closed out the rivalry tilt and secured the win.
Next up, Michigan will return to U-M Soccer Stadium and welcome UCLA on Friday (Oct. 17) at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast nationally on Big Ten Network.
