U-M Dominates EMU Open with Seven Weight Titles

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team competed unattached and dominated the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday (Nov. 3), taking seven of the 10 individual weight class championships.
Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) captured his third straight EMU Open crown as he went 5-0 in the heavyweight division. Winning their second straight titles in the lightweight divisions were 125-pounder A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) and 141-pounder Clark Forward (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold HS), who finished with 4-0 and 5-0 records, respectively.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edward HS) breezed through the 157-pound division with two pins and a 4-0 record to earn his second straight EMU crown. Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward HS) recorded back-to-back technical falls in the second round and the semifinals on his way to earning the 149-pound title.
Sixth-year senior Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) also went undefeated with a 4-0 record to repeat as the 174-pound EMU Open champion, and Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edward HS) had a perfect 5-0 record with three technical Falls as he captured the 184-pound title.
Jeremiah Tobias (Grass Lake, Mich./Manchester HS), who suffered an early loss but battled back through the 149-pound consolation rounds to finish in third place with a 6-1 record, recorded an EMU Open record of five falls.
The Wolverines have two weeks off before they head to East Lansing, Mich., to compete unattached in the Michigan State Open on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17-18.
