No. 4 Hoosiers Outlast Wolverines in Triple Overtime

MADISON, Wis. -- In the longest match in school history the No. 4-seeded University of Michigan men's soccer team lost a defensive battle to No. 1-seeded and No. 4-ranked Indiana, falling 1-0 in three overtimes in a semifinal match at the Big Ten Championship Friday (Nov. 9) at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
Entering the third extra frame of the match, Indiana held a 21-12 edge in shots, but both teams were without a goal. That all ended at the 122:10 mark when Big Ten Player of the Year Pat Noonan sent a Vijay Dias pass past Wolverine goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) for the game-winner.
Zawacki turned away seven of the eight shots the Hoosier offense sent his way, keeping Indiana scoreless through 120 minutes of action. Indiana's first team All-Big Ten goalkeeper Colin Rogers matched Zawacki's scoreless effort through two overtimes, as he kept all three Wolverine shots out of the net en route to his 12th shutout of the season.
Michigan's best chance to end the match came in the second overtime, when freshman Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) took a Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Preparatory) forwarding pass, spun around an Indiana defender and sent a shot over the head of a rushing Rogers. But the ball sailed over the cross bar and the game remained scoreless.
Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and Robert Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) led the Maize and Blue offense with three shots apiece, while six other Wolverines added one shot each. White, Turpin and Andrew Balazer (Jackson, Mich./Northwest HS) turned in the Wolverines' three shots on goal.
With a 10-7-1 overall record and tie for third place in the Big Ten regular season and tournament, the Wolverines have an outside chance at an at-large bid to the 48-team NCAA Tournament. The NCAA pairings will be announced Monday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. EST.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On the Wolverine defense ... "The defense absolutely played well for the second straight game in the Big Ten Championship. The game plan was to shut down Indiana's Pat Noonan, and James Baez-Silva did a good job of that. Other than the goal we kept him in check the entire game."
On goalkeeper Joe Zawacki ... "I told Joe he was the starter last night. It was a tough decision, but I felt Joe is more experienced and that is what you need in the postseason. He did almost a flawless job of reading the game and looked every bit an All-Big Ten goalkeeper."
On the season ... "This team accomplished everything we wanted in our second year as a varsity program, setting us up nicely for a breakout season in 2002."
