ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Elise Ray (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake HS) won the vault, uneven bars and balance beam on the way to capturing the all-around at the University of Michigan women's gymnastics exhibition performance today (Sunday, Dec. 16). She posted a 39.400 in front of 637 fans at Cliff Keen Arena who saw the Wolverines perform as one squad after injuries forced a change from the traditional intrasquad competition format.
Counting the top five scores, U-M scored 48.425 on the vault, 48.650 on the uneven bars, 48.000 on the balance beam and 47.850 in the floor exercise. The total number of competitors for each event ranged from a low of five on the floor to eight on the uneven bars.
Freshman Erica Rubin (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard Westlake HS) opened the meet on the vault, scoring a 9.550 after a slight step on the landing. Second-year captain Jodie Rosenberg (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS) made a rare vault appearance and scored 8.900 after over-rotating and falling forward on the landing. Freshman Kallie Steffes (Naperville, Ill./Central HS) scored a 9.700 before fellow freshman Lauren Mirkovich (Burlingame, Calif./Notre Dame HS) complete a solid 9.725 vault to finish second. Sophomore Calli Ryals (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) posted a 9.700, while Ray closed the event with the highest score of the rotation, a 9.750.
Steffes opened the uneven bars but fell early in her routine and finished the event with a score of 8.650. Rosenberg, a floor exercise specialist, put together a fine bars performance and scored 9.725. Junior Cami Singer (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) followed with a similar performance and scored 9.675. As the fourth competitor, Mirkovich posted a 9.100 on the bars.
Sophomore Alison Rudisi (Mississauga, Ontario/Loyola Catholic HS) scored 9.575 on the bars. It was her career debut as a Wolverine after spending all of last season recovering from her second torn anterior cruciate ligament. Ryals followed with a 9.800, good for second place, before senior Amy Kuczera (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park HS) posted a 9.150. Ray closed the rotation and won her second consecutive event with a 9.875.
Steffes opened the balance beam and posted a 9.650, slightly stumbling twice and taking a step on the landing. Second on the beam was Rosenberg, who was able to recover from a fall and scored 9.100. Freshman Kara Rosella (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills HS), in her only performance of the meet, put a solid performance together and scored 9.550. Singer followed her with a 9.050 after falling near the end of her routine.
Kuczera suffered an early fall on the beam but recovered to score 8.525. Ryals and Ray finished the rotation with smooth routines and posted scores that reflected the quality routines. For the second consecutive rotation, Ryals finished second, with a score of 9.800, while Ray won her third event with a 9.900.
Steffes opened the final rotation, the floor exercise, with a 9.800. Rudisi made her second appearance of the meet with a 8.950 on the floor, and Rosenberg was third in the rotation and scored 9.325 to set up Ryals and Ray.
Ryals posted the score to beat with a 9.900 on the floor. A solid first pass set up the rest of her routine and helped her to the top score in the event. A comparable routine put Ray in shape to sweep, but a final score of 9.875 was one quarter of a tenth shy of tying Ryals for the floor exercise title.
Ryals' overall performance gave her an all-around score of 39.200, just two tenths behind Ray.
Michigan heads to Hawaii to open the season at the Maui Invitational on Friday, Jan. 4, 2002. The first home competition is Sunday, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. against Northern Illinois in Cliff Keen Arena.
