Michigan History at Big Ten Indoors
Since the inception of the women's indoor championship in 1982, the Wolverines have won the team title on four occasions, with back-to-back titles in the 1998-99 seasons. Michigan is ranked third in the Big Ten with four indoor team titles, trailing only Wisconsin (seven) and Illinois (five). The Wolverines have placed in the top five every year since 1993.
2000 Big Ten Indoor Championships
Last year, Michigan finished fifth with 77 points at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Indiana won the team title with 150 points, as Wisconsin (112), Minnesota (80) and Purdue (78) rounded out the top five. The Wolverines had a pair of athletes who won Big Ten Indoor titles. Brandi Bentley (1997-2000) won her second straight individual crown in the long jump with a mark of 19-11 3/4. Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/LaSalle SS) came in first in the 800-meter run for the first Big Ten crown of her career.
Michigan's top three performances from returning athletes came from Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS), Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) and Erin White (Battle Creek, Mich./Central HS). Jazwinski came in fourth in the 3,000-meter run and sixth in the 5,000. Caruthers had a fourth-place showing in the 600 a year ago and has run well all season long in that event. White's 2:13.03 in the 800 was good enough for third, and she could move up in that event with Ouellet not in the competition.
Last Week: Silverston Invitational
Michigan hosted the Silverston Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 17) at the U-M Track Building. The Wolverines won five events on the day with competition coming from Detroit, the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo among other competitors. The highlight of the day came from Katie Jazwinski, who won the mile with a personal-best and NCAA provisional time of 4:47.59. Here are the event winners:

Leading the Way
Teyonna Simpson and Katie Jazwinski lead the U-M squad with four individual wins during the 2001 indoor season. Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS), Adrena Williams (Berkeley, Calif./James Logan HS) and Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) are tied with three victories this season. Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS), April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) and Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) have won two individual events thus far during the indoor season for a well-balanced Wolverine attack. Williams, who won two events in the same meet (Red Simmons, Jan. 20), is the only Wolverine to pull off the trick.
Staying Perfect
Teyonna Simpson is undefeated this year in her specialized event with four triple jump titles under her belt. Katie Jazwinski is the only other Wolverine perfect this season, as she won the mile twice (Feb. 3 and Feb. 17) in her only two appearances. Both Simpson and Jazwinski have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in their events.
