STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team ended the two-day Big Ten Conference Indoor Championships in seventh place Sunday (Feb. 25) at Penn State. The Wolverines' 58 points were three short of moving ahead of Illinois, while Wisconsin won the team title by 20 points (114).
For the second year in a row, the Wolverines went without a Big Ten Indoor individual champion, but they did turn in top performances on the day. Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) and Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) gave Michigan its best two-man finish on the day as they placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run, both in NCAA provisional qualifying times.
Freshman Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS) gave the Wolverines their other strong long-distance finish with his fourth-place time of 4:10.74 in the mile.
In the long sprints, Michigan had a pair of runners who continued their fine seasons. Jeremy Schneider (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover HS) ran well in the 600-meter run and placed fourth, while Kevin Lamb (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) took sixth in his 400 final.
Michigan's best finish in the field came from senior Oded Padan (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance HS), who tripled jumped his way to sixth place with a leap of 49-0 1/4.
The Wolverines will be back in action on Thursday (March 1) for the EMU Last Chance in Ypsilanti, Mich.
