U-M Takes Nine Weights, Dominates No. 22 Wisconsin

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team completed an exciting weekend with a dominating 37-4 victory against No. 22-ranked Wisconsin Saturday (Feb. 3) at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines (13-3-1, 3-1 Big Ten) won the first five matches of the evening and nine of the 10 weight classes.
Michigan started quickly for the second straight night with sophomore A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) winning a 9-4 decision at 125 pounds and redshirt freshman Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./The Peddie School), ranked No. 10, collecting an 11-8 decision over No. 8 Kevin Black at 133 pounds. Redshirt freshman Clark Forward (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold HS) received a forfeit at 141 pounds, giving the Wolverines a 12-0 advantage in the match.
Michigan's sophomore No. 11 149-pounder Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) continued the domination of Wisconsin with a 14-5 major decision over P.J. Dowling. Redshirt freshman Pat Owen (Polson, Mont./Polson HS) added a fall at 1:33 against Nate Erdman to give Michigan a 22-0 lead.
Wisconsin gained its only victory of the match as top-ranked Donny Pritzlaff, the defending NCAA champion at 165 pounds, scored a 14-6 major decision over No. 6-ranked junior Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS).
Senior co-captain Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) started another string of Michigan victories with a match termination against Ryan Lewis at 6:56 of the match. Olson won the match by a 25-10 score, giving the Wolverines four team points.
Junior Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edwards HS), ranked sixth at 184 pounds, added a 13-10 decision over No. 9-ranked Ralph DeNisco at 184 pounds. Senior co-captain Joe DeGain (White Lake, Mich./Clarkston HS) scored a five-point victory in a match termination over Jareck Horton (match stopped at 5:45 with DeGain leading 16-1). Junior heavyweight Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) won a close 2-1 overtime match against Wisconsin's Justin Staebler in the 30-second tiebreaker to finish the competition.
The Wolverines travels to Indiana Friday evening (Feb. 9, 7 p.m.) before returning to Cliff Keen Arena against Ohio State Sunday afternoon (Feb. 11, 2 p.m.).
