Wolverines Use Fast Start to Gain Weekend Split at UNO
2/3/2001 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
OMAHA, Neb. -- The goal of the evening was getting off to a good start and the University of Michigan ice hockey team did just that, defeating Nebraska-Omaha 4-1 on Saturday evening (Feb. 3). The Maize and Blue gained its 20th victory of the season and earned its first-ever win at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, avenging the previous night's 4-1 loss.
Nine seconds into the contest, UNO was called for obstruction tripping and Michigan took advantage when Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) put in a rebound in front of the net at the 56 seconds mark. Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) and Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) set up the play to give Cammalleri the chip-in and provide the Wolverines with the early lead.
Michigan (20-7-4, 13-5-4 CCHA) didn't stop at one power-play goal and converted its second of three attempts with Mark Kosick's (Victoria, B.C.) goal at 18:12 by way of two crisp passes from Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) and John Shouneyia (W. Bloomfield, Mich.). The period ended with Michigan up 2-0.
The second period was a stalemate between the teams, which had minimal scoring chances but one quality opportunity a side. Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) was foiled on a breakaway attempt by Maverick goaltender Dan Ellis, and Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) did his part in net, stopping a three-shot onslaught at the net by UNO. It looked like U-M would head into the locker room with a comfortable 2-0 lead, but Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) was called for charging and Aaron Smith put in the Mavericks' lone goal with 1:49 left in the period.
The crowd rose to its feet at the beginning of the third period, and a sign of hope was in the air for the Mavericks until Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) scored at 2:36 on a wrap-around goal that double-banked off the UNO goaltender. The goal took the life out the Mavericks and Trainor finished them off with an empty-netter with 36 seconds left.
The Maize and Blue remain three points behind CCHA leader Michigan State, which won 2-1 at Northern Michigan. Michigan will return home for a two-game set with Northern Michigan at Yost Ice Arena on Feb. 9-10.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "I think the difference was mental preparation. We came out and reacted to the play and didn't let them (Nebraska-Omaha) take the play to us."
Sophomore Forward Mike Cammalleri
On the game ... "We came out and played hard tonight. Guys like (J.J.) Swistak were banging in the corners and digging out the puck, everyone contributed and we played a full game. It was a tough place to play and fun as well seeing all the fans get into the game the way they do."
Junior Goaltender Josh Blackburn
On the difference in the game compared to the previous night's loss ... "We didn't want a repeat of last night. We were more focused and the guys did a great job of clearing the rebounds away. I played in Lincoln (Nebraska) and it was a little special for me to get a win here."
