U-M Drops Regular-Season Finale at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The sixth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team went down 3-1 to top-ranked Michigan State on Thursday night (March 1) at Munn Ice Arena. The Wolverines' lone goal was scored by Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario), his 22nd of the season.
Michigan finishes the regular season with a 22-11-5 overall record and have clinched at least a tie for second in the CCHA with a 16-9-3 mark. In order for the Wolverines to earn the No. 2 seed for the CCHA playoffs, Michigan needs Miami -- which is two points behind U-M in the CCHA standings and owns the tiebreaker -- to lose or tie tomorrow night (Friday, March 2) when the RedHawks host Ohio State.
The first period was a scoreless draw, and Wolverine goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) was the story. Blackburn stopped all of the 10 shots he faced, including five quality scoring chances and three breakaway attempts.
The second period appeared to emulate the previous session until Spartan Brad Fast cracked Blackburn's armor with a power-play goal at 10:07 to give Michigan State a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines failed to employ their offensive weapons and found themselves down 2-0 after Troy Ferguson found the back of the net at 14:50.
A frustrated Michigan team let things get out of hand in the third when Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) received a 10-minute misconduct penalty and a game misconduct for openly disagreeing with a holding call while U-M was on the penalty kill. The Spartans took advantage of the five-on-three and took a commanding 3-0 lead at 3:35.
With five and half minutes remaining the Wolverines evaded the shutout when Jay Vancik (Medina, Ohio) fired a shot which was tipped by Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) and Cammalleri was at the net to put in the rebound.
The Wolverines will regroup and prepare for the first round of the CCHA playoffs at Yost Ice Arena. The best-of-three series will begin on Friday (March 9) at 7:35 p.m., and Michigan's first-round opponent could be Northern Michigan, Ferris State, Alaska-Fairbanks, Notre Dame or Bowling Green.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "Taking to many penalties was our downfall. Five on five we played really well. We just killed ourselves giving up the bad penalties."
On the CCHA playoffs ... "We're gonna give our kids the weekend off and start focusing on next week. The playoffs will be a fresh start for us. Right now we have no guarantees and we have to play every game like it's our last and focus game to game."
