ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The sixth-ranked Michigan ice hockey team defeated Ferris State University 8-3 Friday night (March 9) at Yost Ice Arena in the first round of the CCHA playoffs. The win gives U-M a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. The Wolverines displayed a balanced attack, which featured six different goal scorers. Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) led the Wolverines with two goals apiece.
The Wolverines (23-11-5) jumped out to an early lead on a power-play goal by Cammalleri. With Ferris State's Troy Milam serving a minor interference penalty, Cammalleri carried the puck over the Bulldog blue line and wristed a shot past Phil Osaer to give the Maize and Blue a 1-0 lead just 4:14 into the first period.
Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) extended the U-M lead to 2-0 midway through the period on his 12th goal of the season. Kosick's shot from the right point defected off Bulldog defenseman Martin Sellgren past Osaer to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead. Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) tallied his 14th goal of the season just 2:05 later to push the Michigan lead to 3-0. Langfeld worked an odd-man rush with John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) before flipping the puck over Osaer's glove hand to give U-M a three-goal cushion after the first period.
Kevin Swider scored twice for Ferris State (13-19-5) to cut the U-M lead to 3-2 midway the second period. Swider's first goal came 5:44 into the period. Jason Basile fired a shot on goal from the far boards that was stopped by Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) before Swider flipped the rebound into the net. Swider scored again 2:14 later on a power play when he took a pass from Chris Kunitz and skated around a sliding Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and slid the puck past Blackburn to trim the Michigan lead to one goal.
The Wolverines responded with three goals of their own to push the lead to 6-2 after two periods of play. Hilbert, Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) and Joe Kautz (Des Plaines, Ill.) each tallied goals in a span of 5:59 to give the Maize and Blue a commanding lead after two periods. Cammalleri added his second goal of the game late in the third period to make the score 7-2. Jon Rogger scored for the Bulldogs to make the score 7-3 before Hilbert picked up his second goal of the contest with just 47 seconds remaining to round out the scoring and give U-M an 8-3 victory.
The Wolverines and Bulldogs square off in game two of the first round CCHA playoff series Saturday night (March 10) at Yost Ice Arena beginning at 7:05 p.m. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Net (Channel 32 on Comcast).

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the win ... "The game wasn't as lopsided as the final score indicated. The game was 3-2 in the second period. We were very lucky. I think Andy Hilbert's goal, the fourth goal, was huge for the team. I give them credit for hanging in there."
On the play of the seniors ... "The seniors all stepped up and had very strong games. Geoff Koch was strong tonight, and Scott Matzka had a great game. I liked our senior class, but what I really liked was the balance in our scoring tonight."
Senior Forward Josh Langfeld
On the game ... "It was a great output for our team; we all played with a lot of intensity. It was playoff hockey, and our team stepped it up. We played well. We had a lot of great chances, and we buried them. That's what it takes in the playoffs. It was a good total effort. Our team played with a lot of heart and character tonight. The bottom line is it's fun to win."
On playing hard tomorrow night ... "It's the playoffs, and you've got to be ready to play. We know what it takes to get to Joe Louis [Arena], and we want to get there. I don't think anybody's going to sit back and hold back. We want to finish it off tomorrow; we don't want to have to play on Sunday."
Junior Goaltender Josh Blackburn
On the team's play ... "The guys played pretty good tonight. Anytime you've only shot 15 or 16 shots against, you must be doing something right. Defense played well, and offense did too."
On tomorrow night's rematch ... "I think we just have to come back tomorrow night focused. We still have another game to win. I'm sure [Ferris State] will come back harder, because I know they can play better than that. So, we just have to be ready for that tomorrow, and come back and play Michigan hockey."
