Rain Leaves Michigan in 20th at El Diablo Intercollegiate

CITRUS SPRINGS, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team finished 20th at the El Diablo Intercollegiate Sunday (March 18) after thunderstorms dropped two inches of rain in three hours and caused the cancellation of the final round. The Wolverines carded team totals of 306 and 300 for a 606 tournament total at El Diablo Golf Club.
Toledo tallied a team total of 579 (301-278) take home the team title. Rhode Island finished second (297-286/583) and Miami (Ohio) finished third (292-292/584). Rice's Scott Phillips (68-72/140) took home individual medalist honors while Toledo's Brad Heaven (75-67/142) and Sean McTernan (71-71/142) along with Penn State's Matt Abbott (74-68/142) all shared runner-up honors.
Junior Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) led the way for the Wolverines with his consistent play. He finished tied for the 13th after carding rounds of 72 and 73 for a 145 tournament total. Redshirt junior Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) was the next closest Wolverine as he finished tied for 73rd after rounds of 77-76 for 153 total.
Junior Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) tied for 83rd (76-78/154), fifth-year senior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) tied for 90th (82-73/155) and redshirt freshman Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) tied for 103rd (81-78/159).
The Wolverines continue their spring season with Michigan's third and final southern trip as they will participate in the Dr Pepper Intercollegiate, Saturday and Sunday (March 24-25) at Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro, Texas.
