Michigan This Week
The University of Michigan women's rowing team opens the spring season at the Big Ten/ACC Double Dual at Lake Monticello in Charlottesville, Va. At 10 a.m., Michigan rows against Virginia, while Ohio State battles North Carolina. At 2 p.m., the teams switch opponents with Michigan taking on North Carolina and Ohio State facing Virginia. Michigan will not race head-to-head with Ohio State.
The Forecast
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and a high of 58 degrees for the races on Saturday.
The Last Time at the Big Ten/ACC Double Dual
Last season, then-No. 6-ranked Michigan's upset then-No. 2 Virginia and defeated North Carolina and Central Florida on March 25 in the first meet of the 2000 season. The first varsity eight and second varsity eight each won both of their races as the Wolverines captured first in five of eight events in the Big Ten/ACC Double Dual.
Head Coach Mark Rothstein
Mark Rothstein is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Michigan rowing team. Rothstein was instrumental in helping the club team become a varsity program in 1996 and has been the only head coach in the program's history. Rothstein has led the program to three consecutive fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Rowing Championship the last three seasons. In the summer of 1999, he was chosen to coach the U.S. Under-23 team at the Nations Cup in Hamburg, Germany. After guiding the team to the inaugural Big Ten championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship last spring, Rothstein was selected as the Big Ten Co-Coach of the Year and the Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
