Wolverines in Seventh after First Day of Big Ten Meet

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team is in seventh place after completing the first day of the Big Ten Conference Championships today (Friday, April 27) at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course. The Wolverines opened with a team score of 309 in the first round and added a 303 in the second round to finish the first day with a 612 total, just 10 strokes off the lead. Michigan State (302-300/602) leads after the first day, followed closely by Indiana (303-301/604) and Minnesota (302-304/606).
Wolverine sophomore Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) continued to play well after a strong spring as she is tied for eighth after firing rounds of 76 and 74 for a 150 first-day total. Benedict is just three strokes behind the co-leaders -- Ohio State's Mollie Fankhauser (70-77/147) and Wisconsin's Allie Blomquist (72-75/147).
Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./North HS) is tied for 10th after carding rounds of 75 and 76, giving her a 151 total after the first day. LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) and Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) are tied for 26th. Wicks opened with a 79 and followed with a 78 to give her a 157 total, while Kruer fired an 82 in the first round but charged back with a 75. Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) is tied for 38th (79-80/159) and Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) is tied for 51st (79-85/164).
The Big Ten Championships continue Saturday (April 28) with 18 holes beginning at 9 a.m. CDT. The 72-hole tournament wraps up Sunday.
