U-M, Bowers Move Up in Big Ten Championships Races

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. -- Led by a round of 78 from Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./North HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team shot 318 in the third round of the Big Ten Conference Championships on Saturday (April 28) and moved up a spot in the standings into a tie for sixth place. The Wolverines (309-303-318/930) are tied with Purdue (298-313-319) heading into the final round of the 72-hole event at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course.
On a day when the overall scoring average was nearly three strokes higher than the opening day due to winds between 20 and 30 miles per hour, Bowers made 12 pars and six bogeys for her round of 78 and climbed three spots into a tie for seventh in the individual standings with her 229 total (75-76-78). Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) is also in the top 20, sitting in a four-way tie for 15th after following a strong first day with a third-round 82 (76-74-82/232).
Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) was the only other Wolverine in the 70s on Saturday, shooting 79 and pulling into a tie for 28th (79-80-79/238), while LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) carded an 80 and is tied for 25th (79-78-80/237). Also competing for U-M are Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS), who is tied for 45th (79-85-81/245), and Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day), who sits in a tie for 48th (82-75-89/246).
Michigan State maintained its lead in the team standings as it posted the best round of the day (309) and stretched its advantage over the field from two shots to seven. The Spartans (302-300-309/911) lead Ohio State (303-305-310/918) by seven, with Northwestern (304-303-314/921) and host Minnesota (302-304-315/921) sitting 10 shots out of first.
Allison Fouch of Michigan State fired a 76 to take over the individual lead with a 224 total (78-70-76), one shot ahead of first-day co-leader Mollie Fankhauser of Ohio State (70-77-78/225). Michigan's Bowers is one of nine players who will enter the final 18 holes within five shots of the leader.
The Big Ten Championships conclude Sunday (April 29) with 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. CDT.
