Michigan This Week
The University of Michigan women's rowing team heads to East Lansing, Mich., to face Michigan State on Saturday (April 7). Races are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Lake Ovid. The regatta is the first dual meet of the season for the Wolverines. It is also the first of back-to-back races against conference opponents, as Michigan travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the Buckeye Invitational next weekend (April 14).
The Forecast
The forecast calls for a breezy day with a 50 percent chance of showers and a high of 62 degrees for the races on Saturday.
The Last Time Against Michigan State
Last season, the then seventh-ranked Wolverines fell to then No. 16 Michigan State by 0.51 seconds on April 16, 2000, at Ford Lake in Belleville, Mich. In the other two NCAA events, Michigan's second varsity eight won its race, while the first varsity four fell to the Spartans.
Michigan Boat Earns First Big Ten Honors
Michigan's first varsity eight was named this season's first Big Ten Conference Boat of the Week (March 28) after posting the fastest season-opening time in the program's five-year history and sweeping races with Virginia and North Carolina on March 24 in Charlottesville, Va. This is the first time in the two-year history of the award that a Michigan boat has been selected as the Boat of the Week.
The boat was coxed by Helen Dalis (Augusta, Ga./Davidson Fine Arts), stroked by Kate Johnson (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS), and featured Laurel Donnell-Fink (Lansing, Mich./Okemos HS), Alison Hickey (Scituate, Mass./Noble and Greenough), Jenny Bryant (Wainfleet, Ontario/Lakeshore Catholic), Christina Meyer (Saline, Mich./Saline HS), Bernadette Marten (Fortville, Ind./Cathedral HS), Tamera McBratney (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville Collegiate) and Kate Maxim (St. Helena Island, S.C./Langley HS) from the seven seat to the bow.
Head Coach Mark Rothstein
Head coach Mark Rothstein is in his fifth year as the head of the Michigan rowing team. Rothstein led the transition from club team to varsity in 1996 and has been the only head coach in the program's history. He has lead the program to three consecutive fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Rowing Championship. In the summer of 1999, he was chosen to coach the U.S. Under-23 team at the Nations Cup in Hamburg, Germany. After guiding the team to the inaugural Big Ten championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship last spring, Rothstein was selected as the Big Ten co-Coach of the Year and the Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
