Wolverines Sweep Spartans on the Water in East Lansing

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team swept all six races against No. 16 Michigan State today (Saturday, April 7) on Lake Ovid. Today's wins give the Wolverines victories in 11 of 12 races so far this season.
In the First Varsity Eight race, Michigan State's rower in the third seat caught a crab, and the force of her oar sticking in the water ejected the rower from the boat, ending the Spartans' race. The Wolverines finished the full 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:28. The time was less than a second off of last week's time against North Carolina (6:27.9), which was the fastest season-opening race in the five-year history of the program.
The Wolverines proved their depth, as the second varsity eight, first varsity four and second varsity four each won races by open water. The second varsity eight won by nearly nine seconds with a time of 6:40.6, while the first varsity four posted a time of 7:22.6 to beat the Spartans by over 13 seconds.
Michigan and Michigan State each raced two second varsity eight boats. The Wolverines' "A" boat won the race with a time of 7:39.5. The Spartans' "A" boat was second with a time of 7:54.4, Michigan's "B" boat was third (8:06.1), and MSU's "B" boat was fourth (8:14.7).
Both of Michigan's novice eight boats won their races against the Spartans, the first novice eight by three seconds and the second novice eight by five seconds.
The Wolverines travel to Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, April 14, for the Buckeye Invitational. It will be the final race of the regular season, as Michigan has a week off before hosting the Big Ten Championships on April 28.
