The afternoon belonged to Derr as he threw a season-best 209-0 in the javelin en route to a first-place title. Derr was the only Maize and Blue representative in any field events on the day.
Michigan fared very well on the track in the evening. Sellers won the 400-meter hurdles, posting a personal-best time of 51.44. It was the fifth fastest 400-meter hurdle time in Michigan history, bumping Calvin Williams' (1977-80) time of 51.46 into sixth place. Sellers' previous best effort was 51.49 that he ran at the 2000 Big Ten Championships. Teammate Andrew Ochs (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) took fourth in the race with a time of 53.31.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the Wolverines took the top two spots as redshirt freshman Ryan Hesselink (Freeport, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) won the race by over eight seconds (9:12.69), with freshman Dave Sage (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) behind him for second (9:21.14).
Freshman Mason Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) was third in the 1,500-meter run (3:47.07), which concluded the first day of the Len Paddock Invitational.
The Maize and Blue will be back in action tomorrow (Saturday, May 12) for the final day of the Len Paddock Invitational on Ferry Field. Field events begin at 11 a.m., with the track portion starting at 1 p.m.
