Wolverines Close Regular Season with Paddock Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team hosted its final meet of the 2001 regular season with the last day of the Len Paddock Invitational today (Saturday, May 12) on Ferry Field. This was the final meet prior to the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships next weekend (May 18-20) in Bloomington, Ind.
The Wolverines began the day by tying for second place in the 100-meter dash. Senior Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Benard HS) and sophomore Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) both ran 11.90 as both were debuting in the event. Freshman Adrena Williams (Berkeley, Calif./James Logan HS) ran a 25.53 for fourth in the 200, rounding out the best Michigan performances in the sprints.
In the 800-meter run, senior Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) had the top Michigan finish as she placed fifth with a time of 2:11.92.
Junior Tasha Phillips (Sarasota Fla./Booker HS) took the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a time of 14.24. Sophomore Breanne Tenclay (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) rounded out the fastest five, coming in fifth (15.32).
The Wolverines did well in both relays that took place on Saturday. The 400-meter relay squad ran a season-best time of 45.92 en route to a first-place finish. The 1,600-meter relay foursome added a runner-up finish with a time of 3:46.51.
Freshman Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) led Michigan in the field with a runner-up effort in the discus (154-6). Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) was third in the shot put as she threw a distance of 47-4 1/2.
One note of significance that took place occurred in the shot put. Mindy Ramsey, competing unattached, threw a Ferry Field record of 50-1 1/4. The toss broke a 13-year-old record (49-7 3/4) set by Angie Ryker of Indiana in 1988.
Michigan will be back in action next weekend (May 18-20) at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
