COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team recorded 16 top-five finishes at the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by Ohio State University on Sunday (May 6) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
A trio of Wolverines began the day for Michigan running well in the sprints. Senior Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) was fourth in the 200-meter dash, while sophomore teammate Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) came in fifth in the 400. Freshman Mora Arnold (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea HS) added another fourth-place finish in the slower section of the 400.
Michigan fared better in the longer distances. Senior Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) had the second fastest collegiate time and was fourth overall in the 800-meter run, while freshman Amy Hatfield (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) was the runner-up in the morning section of the 800. In the 3,000, the Maize and Blue took fourth and fifth, with sophomore Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) edging out sophomore Katie Easton (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) for fourth.
The Wolverines had two athletes place in the top five in the hurdles as well. Junior Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) was fifth in the morning 100-meter hurdles, and junior Shalina Rankin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln HS) came in third in the 400-meter hurdles.
Michigan's relay teams also produced well on Sunday. The 400-meter relay team took third, while the 1,600-meter relay squad placed runner-up behind Kent State.
The field events continued to be one of the Wolverines' most balanced areas. Michigan's best effort on the day came from sophomore Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS), who placed second in the triple jump. Junior Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) was fourth in the high jump.
The Wolverines also had an athlete in the top four of every throwing event. Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) was fourth in the shot put and added a third-place finish in the hammer throw. In the discus, freshman Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) took fourth, while fellow freshman Janelle Jaha (Stanley, N.D./Stanley HS) rounded out the day with a fourth in the javelin.
Michigan will close out the regular season when it hosts the Len Paddock Invitational next Friday and Saturday (May 11-12) on Ferry Field in Ann Arbor, Mich. Field events begin both days at 11 a.m. Track events start at 6:45 p.m. Friday and at 1 p.m. Saturday.
