Johnson, Marten Named to All-America Rowing Squad

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan seniors Kate Johnson (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) and Bernadette Marten (Fortville, Ind./Cathedral HS) have been named to the 2001 Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association All-America First Team. This is Marten's first national honor, while Johnson's selection to the team makes her the first and only Division I rower to be named to the squad three times in the history of the award.

Both rowers are being recognized for their efforts in the first varsity eight, which included a Big Ten Conference title, Central Region title and third-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Their efforts also helped the team to its second consecutive Big Ten championship, fourth consecutive Central Region championship and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships.

Johnson and Marten both rowed in the first varsity eight during the 2001 season. Marten, a graduate student in her final year of collegiate eligibility, solidified the engine room, while Johnson, a second-year captain, stroked the boat for all races but two in which she was injured.

Both Johnson and Marten were also named to the CRCA All-Central Region First Team, making them eligible for the All-America honor.

The All-America award is designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by her institution, participating in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the first varsity boat and the student-athlete's head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.

For each region, 12 rowers and, if nominated, a coxswain received first team honors with the same number receiving second team honors. The All-America first and second teams were selected by the regional chairpersons following the NCAA Championships from the rowers who had received All-Region first team honors.
