Michigan Adds Bowers to Women's Gymnastics Staff

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics program has announced the hiring of Joanne Bowers as its second assistant coach.

Bowers joins the Wolverines after four years as an assistant at Kent State University. Last season, she helped lead the Golden Flashes to a record-setting score of 195.675 to capture the Mid-American Conference women's gymnastics championship. For her efforts, she was named the 2001 National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women (NACGC/W) Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Bowers has a diverse background in gymnastics. She was a four-year letterwinner and two-time captain of the women's gymnastics team at James Madison University. Following her graduation, she coached various club teams in the Midwest and on the East Coast and spent time as a gymnastics judge. From 1989-93, she was the head women's gymnastics coach at Illinois State University, where she coached individuals to the NCAA Regional and National Championships. Bowers returned to coaching club teams and judging gymnastics before joining Kent State in 1998.
A native of Newport News, Va., Bowers earned her bachelor's degree in physical education from James Madison in 1982 and received her master's degree in education with a minor in administration and supervision from Austin Peay State in 1985. Her husband, John, is an assistant football coach at Bowling Green State University. She has two sons: David, 18, who will play football at Kent State in the fall, and Ross, 4.
