FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team won 6-1 over West Virginia in an exhibition match on Saturday (Aug. 25) at the IUPU-Fort Wayne Invitational on Hefner Field. Freshmen Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) and Karl Lopata (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington HS) and junior transfer Jody Keeling (Odessa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) combined for four goals and three assists on the afternoon. The Wolverines outshot the Mountaineers 18-7 in their first taste of action for the 2001 season.
Michigan got on the board early and often in the first half. Just 2:05 into the match, sophomore Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Caro HS) netted the first goal off a feed from Cameron. After West Virginia tied up the game at 1-1, Cameron impacted the game again with his second assist, this time finding Lopata for a goal to take the lead for good at the 10:18 mark. Cameron continued his stellar first half moments later when he lifted the ball into the upper left corner, extending the Wolverine lead.
Before the half was done, Keeling put two of his own shots into goal for a 5-1 halftime lead. The first score came off an assist from sophomore Ian Hirschfield (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest HS), as Keeling knocked the ball toward the lower left corner. The final goal of the half was a chip shot over the goalkeeper that was unassisted.
Michigan scored the lone goal of the second half, which came at the end of the period. Sophomore Andrew Balazer (Jackson, Mich./Northwest HS) used the top right corner to garner his first goal of the game for the final score of 6-1.
The Wolverines used a trio of goalkeepers during the match. Redshirt freshman Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) played the first half and had two saves. Junior Brad King (Portage, Mich./Northern HS) and freshman Bryan Lau (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) shared the second period without allowing a goal and had two saves combined.
Michigan will next take on Notre Dame in its final exhibition match on Sunday (Aug. 26) at 2:30 EST/CDT in day two of the IUPU-Fort Wayne Invitational.
