BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped its season opener to Loyola Marymount by a 3-2 score on Friday (Aug. 31) in the first game of the Cal Invitational.
The Lions opened the scoring at the 8:26 mark of the first half on a goal by Laura Trask and added another in the 30th minute, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. Michigan added six shots of its own in the opening half of the game but was unable to score.
U-M regrouped at the break and came out strong in the second half as Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) scored an early goal unassisted. The Wolverines carried the momentum for most of the second half with 13 shots compared to LMU's four. However, Trask scored again as the Lions regained their two-goal edge.
Michigan cut the lead by one as Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) scored on a 10-yard pass from sophomore Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS), but the late goal was not enough as U-M lost to the Lions, 3-2.
Michigan outshot LMU 19-10 in the game. Goalkeeper Bre Bennett (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) made four saves for the Wolverines.
Michigan plays No. 14-ranked California in the fourth game of the Cal Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 2) at 4:30 p.m. PDT. Cal blanked Pacific 4-0 in the tournament's other first-day action.

On the team's season opener ... "We didn't have a very strong first half, although we did have our opportunities. If we had capitalized on them then the outcome may have been different. We need to take Saturday to prepare for the Cal game."
