HONOLULU -- A move to a younger lineup helped the University of Michigan volleyball team take No. 5 Hawaii to four games before falling 3-1 (30-24, 24-30, 30-23, 30-14) on the second day of action (Saturday, Sept. 1) at the Hawaiian Airlines Classic. The team's improvement from the previous night's (Aug. 31) three-game loss to No. 7 UCLA was highlighted by the effort of redshirt freshman setter Lisa Gamalski (Milwaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial HS), who dished up 39 assists, posted eight kills and added six digs in her first start as a Wolverine.
The sophomore duo of Chantel Reedus (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) and Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS) continued to shine as Reedus led the team in two categories, posting a .238 attack percentage and adding 16 digs, and Moore nailed nine kills and seven digs. Junior Katrina Lehman (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Marian HS) provided the team with two service aces and five block assists in addition to landing a team-high 11 kills in the match.
After falling 30-24 in the first game, Michigan (0-2) bounced back to win the second game 30-24. In the game, the Wolverines held Hawaii (2-2) to just eight kills while forcing the Rainbow Wahine into 13 errors for an attack percentage of -.147. Michigan wasn't able to continue the momentum from the win and fell to the Rainbow Wahine 30-23 in game three. Struggling with offense in the fourth game, Michigan fell 30-14 in the final game.
Prior to Michigan's match, seventh-ranked UCLA knocked off No. 19 Kansas State in four games (30-25, 25-30, 30-25, 30-16). Michigan faces Kansas State on Sunday (Sept. 2) at 5 p.m. HST on the final day of the Hawaiian Airlines Classic.
NOTES
• No. 19 Kansas State and Michigan are both looking for the first win of the weekend. In addition to their loss to No. 7 UCLA on Saturday (Sept. 1), the Wildcats fell in five games to No. 5 Hawaii on Friday (Aug. 31).
• Freshman Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) saw her first significant playing time in the match against Hawaii and posted eight kills, eight digs and one service ace. She is still recovering from an injury suffered this summer which kept her from participating on the U.S. Junior National team at the World Junior Championship currently being held in the Dominican Republic.
QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Mark Rosen
On the match ... "We played significantly better tonight. I am really pleased. We struggled at the end of the fourth game, but otherwise it was a good match. The effort was there, but we still lost, which is unfortunate and frustrating. Overall though the level of play was significantly better. We raised the level big time and gave ourselves a chance to compete. We still have some big steps to take, but we are getting closer to being able to compete with top programs like these."
On the younger starting lineup ... "We switched the lineup for tonight's match. We put in (freshman) Jennifer Gandolph for (senior) Nicole Kacor and (redshirt freshman) Lisa Gamalski for (senior) Shannon Melka. Lisa played awesome. She attacked very well. Her 20 attempts shows that she is not afraid to attack, and she did a nice job for us. Katrina Lehman also had a very good night. She played well as both a blocker and an attacker. Chantel Reedus played a good match. She and Erin Moore both played well."
On the improvement in the defensive play ... "Our defense was much better tonight even though we were out-dug in the stats (63-42). I just don't think that stats tell the whole story, because we really played very good defense."
