ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team posted its third consecutive shutout on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 2) with a 1-0 victory over Louisville at Ocker Field.
Freshman Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) netted the decisive marker for the second consecutive Sunday, while the Wolverines defense limited the Cardinals to only three shots and none on goal. By blanking Louisville, senior goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) collected her third consecutive shutout, and she has not allowed a goal in her last 210 minutes while manning the cage.
"The defense is playing really well so it is making my job much easier," said Tasch. "It is really nice to get a shutout though because it helps you mentally and you always feel good knowing you didn't give up a goal."
The only offense the Wolverines would need to improve their record to 3-1 came from Hortillosa's second goal of the year at the 27:10 point in the first half. After taking a pass from sophomore April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS), Hortillosa spun to her left and fired the ball into the left corner of the cage past Cardinals goalkeeper Christy Hershey.
With the goal, Hortillosa and Fronzoni took over the team lead in goals and assists, respectively, with two apiece. Fronzoni also paced the offense with a game-high 10 shots while the Wolverines accumulated a season-high 21 shots on the afternoon.
"Louisville came out to play and their program has really come along in the last couple of years," said Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz. "We were able to get off some shots though and our defense was able to make it hold up so I'm very happy with the win."
Michigan will take to the road for the first time this season as it travels to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete in the Temple Invitational. The Wolverines will open with North Carolina on Saturday (Sept. 8) at 1:30 p.m.
