U-M Begins Fall Competition Schedule at Elk Rapids

The first event takes place this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23) as the Wolverines travel to Elk Rapids, Mich., for the sixth annual Elk Rapids Collegiate Softball Tournament. Michigan will be joined by Central Michigan, Michigan State and Western Michigan. The Saturday games of the round-robin tournament are five innings in length, while the Sunday contests are slated for the usual seven innings.

Two weeks later the Wolverines conclude their fall schedule by hosting the Michigan Softball Fall Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7, at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor. Joining Michigan in the four-team field are Florida State, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan. Each game of the tournament will be kept to a length of one hour and 45 minutes, with overall record determining the champion.

The 2002 Wolverines return six starters and 14 letterwinners from a 2001 team that won its seventh Big Ten regular-season championship in 10 years and returned to the Women's College World Series for the fifth time in seven seasons.
Some of the key performers returning for the Wolverines are 2001 NFCA All-American first-team selection Kelsey Kollen (Cerritos, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) at second base, 2001 All-Big Ten second-team honoree Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) at pitcher, 2001 All-Big Ten first-team selection Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS) at third base and 2001 All-Big Ten first-team utility player Melinda Moulden (LaCrescenta Valley, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS).
