ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team closed out its Elbel Field season with a 2-0 shutout victory over Butler University on Friday night (Sept. 21). The win is Michigan's fourth of the season and second at home, pushing the Wolverines' non-conference record to a perfect 4-0.
Wolverine goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) had four saves en route to his third shutout of the season. Zawacki's biggest stop came on a penalty kick from Butler's Michael Mariscalco at 23:26, after the Wolverines were called on a foul inside the goalkeeper's box.
The game was scoreless until 15:31, when sophomore defenseman Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Preparatory) used his height as an advantage and sent in a header off a corner kick from senior J.J. Kern (Trenton, Mich./Lake Orion HS) for his first goal of the season. Freshman Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) scored his first career goal in the 88th minute, after intercepting an errant Butler pass. He then dribbled past two defenders and put the ball to rest in the lower left corner of the net to make the final score 2-0.
Both Cameron and junior Robert Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) had three shots each and five others registered a shot for Michigan. Michigan received three yellow cards in the second half of the game, while Butler earned four, including one to head coach Joe Sochacki for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Michigan (4-1, 0-1 Big Ten) will open its Big Ten Conference home schedule on Sunday (Sept. 23), when the Wolverines face the Northwestern Wildcats at 1 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field. The contest will be preceded by an alumni game, featuring ex-members of the U-M varsity and club programs, at 11 a.m.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On his feelings about the game ... "Well, I think in terms of progressive steps for a team to take, certainly being in a battle against a team that has a lot of fight in them. Knowing how to absorb all that pressure and make it pay in the late stages is a step that any team has to take to move on to higher levels, and we did that tonight. Now the challenge is we're going to have another battle on Sunday against a Big Ten team."
On freshman Knox Cameron ... "Knox is a guy that I keep looking at to be a 90-minute player. We want him to be a 90-minute player, but he's a big guy, and on a loose field like this, you expend a lot of energy. I think you saw in the last half though, we needed to sub Knox to allow him to finish the game, but he answered it all in the last 45 minutes of the game."
On goalkeeper Joe Zawacki ... "We wish we would have had him last season. We knew this is what we brought Joe in for, and as long as he can keep us in a position to win, these guys look like they're able to figure out how to win games. Hopefully we just take this to the later part of the season."
