ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team scored a dramatic overtime goal to beat the University of Wisconsin 1-0 Sunday (Sept. 30) at U-M Soccer Field, giving the Wolverines a winning record for the first time this season.
Sophomore Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) took a pass from freshman Liz Dosa (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont HS), squeaked between two defenders and kept a shot low and to the far side of the net to end the offensive stalemate with 4:29 left in the first overtime. It was Chavez's first goal of the season and Dosa's first point.
The game featured very few scoring chances, but the Wolverines and Badgers took plenty of shots at each other. The two teams traded elbows, tackling and striking penalties, collecting 32 fouls. It was a rough game that seemed destined to get out of hand before the referee issued a red card to Wisconsin defenseman Allie Rogoshske with 26:25 left in regulation. The foul occurred within the 18-yard line, giving Michigan a penalty shot and reducing Wisconsin to 10 players. Wolverines coach Debbie Rademacher enlisted junior Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) to take the shot but her kick sailed high over the net.
With the man advantage Michigan began a long process of wearing down the Badgers, culminating in Chavez's goal. Rademacher substituted often, keeping her team fresh, empowering them to mount offensive pressure without tiring. But Wisconsin's defense rose to every opportunity in the second half, ending regulation in a scoreless tie.
Early in overtime it was apparent playing one man down was draining Wisconsin. Michigan junior Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) almost scored on a corner kick pass from Sullivant but Wisconsin goalie Kelly Conway made a quick reflex save.
Michigan's defense recorded its third straight shutout by playing as a cohesive unit. Defenders Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS), Vicky Whitley (Spring, Texas/Klein HS), Michele Pesiri (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart HS) and Williamson sacrificed their bodies to deflect passes away from their net and generated traffic in front of goalie Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) to limit Wisconsin's scoring chances.
U-M (5-4, 3-1 Big Ten) is away next weekend for Big Ten matches at Ohio State on Friday (Oct. 5, 6 p.m ) and Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 7, 3 p.m.).

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the teams combining for 32 total fouls ... "We knew it was going to be a physical game. It was a game we haven't faced before. It was tough but we matched them."
On the offensive stalemate through two halves ... "We had the space and we just needed to find it. After Wisconsin lost a girl (due to an ejection in the second half) they were motivated. Often when a team loses someone it makes that team play that much harder. I think that's what Wisconsin did today."
On the play of her defense ... "I'm really happy. I'm very pleased with our two shutouts this weekend."
On Michigan's three-game winning streak ... "We've been working hard and it's come together. We've found our rhythm."
Sophomore Forward Stephanie Chavez
On her game-winning goal ... "We kept our intensity high throughout the entire game and we finally got a break."
Junior Defender Vicky Whitley
On the play of the defense ... "Our communication has really picked up. We know how each one of us is going to play the ball. We're playing really well."
On trading elbows with Wisconsin forwards ... "Every time we play Wisconsin it's real physical, it's tradition. It's extra motivation for us. I just wanted to win that much more."
