ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two rowers with ties to the University of Michigan women's rowing team participated last month in the two of the top regattas in the world. Recent graduate Kate Johnson (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) stroked USRowing's top boat to a fourth-place finish at the World Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland, while freshman Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos HS) captured a silver medal with a second-place finish in the coxless four and helped the United States to a fifth-place finish in the eight at the World Junior Championships in Duisburg, Germany.
Johnson has been rowing for the national team since leading the Wolverines to second place at the 2001 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. After a successful summer of rowing, she was selected to stroke the eight at the World Championships and became the first U-M rowing alumnae to participate in the event. In the first eight race, her boat finished fourth to advance to the repechage heat for a chance to earn a spot in the grande final. With a third-place finish, the boat advanced to the final of the event. The U.S. boat, filled with young rowers, finished in fourth with a time of 6:05.880. The time was just over a second behind third-place Germany and just over three seconds behind Austria, the world champion.
