ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team hosted top-ranked Stanford on Friday night (Jan. 11) in a non-scoring exhibition in preparation for Saturday's 1 p.m. dual meet. The Cardinal established two Canham Natatorium pool records in the 100-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley while also racking up two NCAA automatic qualifying times and 11 NCAA consideration times.
Michigan's top performance came from sophomore diver Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS) as he won the platform competition with an NCAA zone qualifying mark of 485.55. Wolverine sophomore Dusty Garwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) was runner-up to Coben on the platform with a mark of 400.95.
The Wolverines also added an NCAA consideration time in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of junior Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.), sophomore Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS), senior Jordan Watland (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and sophomore Mike Porth (Owosso, Mich./Corunna HS) finished second overall with a time of 6:32.86.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Cardinal sophomore Peter Marshall posted a new pool record with a time of 46.92, which broke the previous pool record of 47.32 that was set by Michigan's Derya Buyukuncu in 1996. Marshall's teammate, Randall Ball, added an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the event with a posting of 47.50.
The other pool record that was broken on Friday evening was in the 400-yard individual medley by Stanford sophomore Markus Rogan. Rogan swam the event in 3:48.81 to break Michigan senior Tim Siciliano's (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) previous mark of 3:49.16 in 2000.
