The Falcons took a 1-0 lead late in the first period when junior forward Tyler Knight hit freshman forward Denis White for a one-time shot past senior goaltender Josh Blackburn's (Choctaw, Okla.) stick side as White was streaking down the slot.
BGSU added to the lead just 1:15 into the second stanza off a Michigan turnover in its own zone. Senior forward Scott Hewson posted the tally, beating Blackburn through his five-hole with a slap shot from the top of the circles. Sophomore forward D'Arcy McConvey was awarded the lone assist after he collected the puck following a collision between two U-M players inside the blueline.
Michigan cut the deficit to one goal just under four minutes later on a Bowling Green power play when freshman defenseman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) streaked down the ice and fired a shot that beat BG netminder Tyler Masters abover his glove. Junior forward Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) created the turnover inside the Falcons' blueline and took a backhanded shot which rebounded off Masters onto the stick of Werner.
The Falcons regained their two-goal advantage just over a minute into the final stanza when senior defenseman Marc Barlow fired a shot from the left faceoff dot past Blackburn, but the Wolverines responded, with sophomore defenseman Andy Burnes (Battle Creek, Mich.) scoring at 13:23 to pull within one. Burnes, who beat Masters on his glove side, was the recipient of a rebound from freshman forward David Moss' (Brighton, Mich.) shot, which caromed off the post and out to Burnes at the top of the right circle.
Michigan pulled Blackburn with 1:40 remaining in favor of an extra attacker but could not convert, and Knight sealed the game for the Falcons with 33 seconds remaining.
Bowling Green outshot the Wolverines 34-33 as Masters halted 31 shots. Blackburn made 30 saves in the losing effort.
The two teams will close out the series on Saturday night (Jan. 26), with faceoff slated for 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.

N O T E S
Michigan was outshot for the first time in 10 games. The last time the Wolverines were outshot was on Dec. 1 in a 6-1 victory over Ferris State. Entering tonight's game, the Wolverines were 4-0-1 when outshot by their opponent.
With the loss, the Wolverines are winless in their last three games (0-2-1) at home, and they dropped their fifth home game of the season. Michigan has not lost more than five home games since 1988-89, and has dropped five home games in one year on three occasions since, including this season (1989-90 and 1999-2000 were the others). U-M is 4-5-2 at Yost Ice Arena this season.
Michigan has suffered four of its five league losses at home.
U-M is 5-5-2 on Fridays this season and has tallied eight of its 13 wins on Saturday.
The last time the Wolverines fell in the first game of a home CCHA series was on Oct. 26 with a 1-0 (ot) loss to Northern Michigan. The Wildcats completed the sweep the next night with a 5-3 victory.
Michigan is 1-1-0 in the second game of a CCHA weekend series after dropping the series opener.
The Wolverines have killed 35 of their opponent's 36 power plays since returning from the holiday break, including 34 straight. U-M's penalty kill held the Falcons to no goals on five chances tonight.
Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the loss tonight ... "We were worried about this, not because of the game last week, but because of the way the week was going. You talk about practice in any sport and it really translates into the games because our practices just seemed to deteriorate as the week went on and that's how we played tonight."
On the team's leadership ... "I don't think there's a better leader in college hockey than Jed Ortmeyer, just by the way he played tonight was another example, but he can't do it for the young players, he can't do it for the other upperclassmen, he can't do it for our defensemen who are out of position or giving the puck away. Our team was out of sync tonight, sometimes you'll have a tough start and you'll get going. I think there was a point where we did get going and the shorthanded goal gave us a lift and we had a great chance the last minute of the second period and didn't score when (Tyler) Masters made a huge save on (Dwight) Helminen. Then they combined to score their third goal which was a tough goal to give up. Then you're battling back and our power play couldn't bail us out and certainly it was a big road game for them and it was a frustrating home game for us."
On the abundance of odd-man rushes in tonight's game ... "We made poor decisions. They out-raced us up the ice but we made poor decisions. In one case a defenseman jumped in the slot, hoping to get a pass, but the pass never came, and they had a breakaway and we don't play that kind of hockey. That's why I say we were out of sync. Our defense weren't playing defense, our fowards weren't giving them any support, and it was just a poor hockey game in terms of how we like to play and how we played tonight."
On whether or not there were any positives in tonight's game ... "Not a lot of positives ... we stayed in the game. I can't tell you we're healthy, (Jed) Ortmeyer's probably suspect for tomorrow and we'll have to wait and see on that. But there's not a lot of positives when you lose at home to the 11th-place team."
On the play of Jed Ortmeyer and why others are not playing like him ... "That's a good question. Jed Ortmeyer is our captain, he's our leader, and he plays like that. He's a good example for our young players. If they had to watch one player on our team they should try to exemplify, it would be Jed Ortmeyer."
Sophomore Defenseman Andy Burnes
On the difference between this week's team and last week's team ... "I think a different team came out tonight than a week ago this time. BG came in ready to play, that's the bottom line, and we obviously didn't. The first period was probably one of the worst periods we played all year and we had our chances and we had our moments but overall we just got outworked and outplayed. I don't know if it was goal sniffing or what it was but ... unfocused is what it comes down to. As a team we weren't ready to play and it showed right from the start."
On how to avoid a repeat of tonight ... "I think we just have to regroup and reevaluate what we need to do every night. We have to look at the big picture, it's not just getting up for one night. First place is on the line every night and we have to get that message across to our team because every point from here on out is huge and could determine whether we're in first, second or third place come the end of the season."
On the lack of concentration ... "They came ready to play and we didn't. We weren't focused ready to play and they took advantage of that. They fed off the crowd and they fed off the environment here at Yost and they took the play right to us all night."
On the differences in the locker room before a game as opposed to on the road ... "It could be distractions, you know, you're at home, you have classes to worry about and everything. When you're on the road you're there for one purpose, to play hockey. I don't know if that's it or not but there's definitely more distractions at home. It's late in the season now and that shouldn't be an issue with players so hopefully it's not that. It's just a matter of coming to the rink everyday with one goal in mind and that's two wins on the weekend."
Junior Foward Mark Mink
On what it takes for the team to get up for a game ... "Look at last weekend, it was a big game. Before the weekend started you could feel the intensity and just this week in practice, you could see it right away, we weren't really focused and the intensity wasn't there compared to a week ago. You can't do that in this league, you have to take every team like Michigan State, you can't take them lightly or else they're going to come out and beat you just like tonight. You have to be focused, talk about a good start and we definitely didn't have that. You have four or five odd-man rushes right away, so we have to play solid defense."
On what was off in practice ... "Intensity wasn't there compared to last week against State when every drill last week everybody was up and just like a game situation. Our passing wasn't crisp this week and the focus around the whole week wasn't there. It got worse and worse each day and you can't have that."
