Wolverines, Fighting Irish Tie in Weekend Series Opener

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Looking to extend its unbeaten streak in Central Collegiate Hockey Association play, the University of Michigan ice hockey team salvaged a tie at Notre Dame's Joyce Center, surviving a two-goal Fighting Irish comeback to skate to a 3-3 overtime tie in the series opener between the two schools on Friday night (Jan. 4).
With the stalemate, the No. 8-ranked Wolverines extended their unbeaten streak in CCHA play to nine games (7-0-2) while also pushing their unbeaten streak against Notre Dame to five games (3-0-2). Michigan outshot the Irish 36-23 and made its mark on the power play, converting on two of four opportunities during the game while holding the Irish scoreless in three chances.
The Wolverines opened the scoring in the first period when junior forward John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) slammed home a rebound on the power play. With Notre Dame's Tom Galvin in the penalty box for hooking, freshman defenseman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) fed a pass from the right point to senior forward Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.) at the top of the slot for a wide-open shot on net. Irish netminder Morgan Cey stopped Murray's blast but gave up a rebound to the left side, where Shouneyia was positioned for the score.
Michigan extended its lead to two goals at 14:57 of the second period when freshman forward Michael Woodford (Westford, Mass.) netted a goal from the low slot. Freshman forward Milan Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) led the Wolverines' rush, streaking down the right side and beating his defender to put a shot on net. Cey made the initial save, but the puck rebounded into the low slot, where freshman forward David Moss (Dearborn, Mich.), trailing the play, tipped the puck back to a following Woodford, who sent it past Cey.
The Irish closed the gap just under two minutes later when senior David Inman capitalized on a waved-off icing call. Senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.), expecting a whistle for icing, played the puck behind the goal line, but the pass was intercepted by junior Jake Wiegand, who fed Inman coming down the right side for the shot before Blackburn could get back in time.
Freshman defenseman Brandon Rogers (Rochester, N.H.) gave Michigan its two-goal lead back 8:30 into the third period on the power play with his first career marker. With five freshmen operating on the ice with the man advantage, Gajic found Rogers on a crisp tape-to-tape pass in the right faceoff circle, where Rogers put an uncontested shot past Cey. Gajic completed his third straight multi-point game and first career multi-assist effort on the marker, while Woodford, who has 4-2-5 in his last two skates, logged his second straight two-point outing.
The Irish responded with the game's next two goals, tying the game with 5:41 remaining in regulation. Inman pulled Notre Dame to within one with just under nine minutes remaining in the game on his second of the night, slamming a pass from junior Connor Dunlop past Blackburn in front of the net. The Irish tied the game at 14:19 on a shot by sophomore Aaron Gill, who beat Blackburn high on his glove side.
Michigan spent the majority of the final five minutes in the Irish zone, posting a good number of high-quality scoring chances, but Cey stopped every opportunity, sending the game into overtime, the Wolverines' eighth extra-stanza game of the season and fourth in their last six games.
The Wolverines managed two shots in the extra session, while the Irish could not mount any offense.
U-M will conclude its series with the Irish on Saturday night (Jan. 5), with opening faceoff slated for 7:05 p.m. at the Joyce Center on the UND campus.

Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "It's disappointing to lose a point when you have a lead in the third period. It wasn't that we didn't capitalize on our chances, it's that we gave up goals that we shouldn't have given up, and those are back-breakers."
