Three U-M Event Sweeps Not Enough at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Despite sweeping three events on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 5), the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team was unable to overcome fifth-ranked Arizona State's sprinters as the Sun Devils captured a 132-111 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The loss drops the Wolverines' record to 4-2 on the season, while Arizona State improves to 4-0.

Sophomore Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) led the sweep in the 200 fly with a time of 1:49.88, followed by senior captain Eric Wilson (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) at 1:51.51 and sophomore Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS). Ketchum also was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle as he posted the Wolverines' only NCAA consideration time on the day at 1:37.61.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Vanderkaay posted another runner-up finish with a time of 2:05.92, which placed behind teammate Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) at 2:05.92. Senior Jason Mallory (Granger, Ind./Penn HS) finished off the sweep by placing third with a time of 2:06.07.
In the distance freestyle events, the Maize and Blue captured five of the top six places. Freshman Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Trafalger HS) and senior All-American Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) led the way for Michigan in the 1,000- and 500-yard freestyle, respectively. Hurd's time of 9:21.82 in the 1,000-yard freestyle barely edged out teammate Brendan Neligan (Hempstead, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) for first, while fellow freshman Chuck Sayao's (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park HS) time of 9:26.88 placed him third.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Siciliano posted his third victory of the weekend, following wins in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley against Arizona on Friday (Jan. 4). Siciliano's time of 4:29.70 at Arizona State led the field in the 500-yard freestyle, which also included Neligan, who placed third at 4:30.66.
On the diving board, sophomore Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS) was the Wolverines' top performer on both the one- and three-meter events. Coben placed first on the one-meter board with a score of 306.32 before adding a runner-up finish in the three-meter competition (305.55).
Michigan's next meet will be on Jan. 11-12 when it hosts No. 1-ranked Stanford at Canham Natatorium. Friday's competition will start at 6 p.m. and is an exhibition. Saturday will be a scored dual meet and is scheduled to begin at noon.
