U-M Opens Season by Hosting Jack Harvey Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team opened its 2002 indoor season on Saturday (Jan. 5) by hosting the Jack Harvey Invitational. The Wolverines received first place finishes in 12 of the 15 events, led by juniors TaNisha Williams (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) and April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS), who each won two events.
Phillips won the first of her two events as she took first place in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 52-4, besting her old mark of 50-4 by nearly two feet. Phillips also won the weight throw by 4-8 as she set a new personal best of 54-6 1/4. Her old mark was 53-11.
Williams finished first in the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.75 seconds and took the long jump with a leap of 19-2 3/4 feet. Freshman Keri Kirk (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) captured Michigan's initial first-place finish of the season when she won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.34. Sophomore Mora Arnold (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea HS) then won the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:34.52. Arnold was followed closely by senior Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburgh, Mich./Edwardsburgh HS), who finished second, crossing the line at 1:35.52.
Junior Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) won the 800 meters as she finished in 2:14.72, followed by freshman Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS) with a time of 2:21.09. Senior Katie Ryan (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) and freshman Chelsea Homan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) finished one-two in the mile run, with Ryan clocking in at 5:07.71 and Homan at 5:17.98.
Senior Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) took first place in the high jump, clearing 5-6 1/4. A pair of Wolverines tied for second place, as freshman Jennifer Kulchar (Burton, Mich./Atherton HS) and Rachael Igbawva each jumped 5-4 1/2. Junior Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) won the triple jump with a mark of 39-1 1/8.
The Wolverines will take to the track next Saturday (Jan. 16) for a dual meet against Indiana at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse beginning at 12:30 p.m.
