Michigan This Week
This weekend the University of Michigan women's rowing team takes its annual trip to the Head of the Charles regatta on the Charles River in Boston, Mass. The two-day event begins on Saturday (Oct. 19), but Michigan will not race until Sunday (Oct. 20). The Wolverines have boats entered in the Championship Fours race, scheduled for 3:21 p.m., and the Championship Eights race, scheduled for 4 p.m. U-M's crew in the Championship Eights race is one of 47 participants vying for the Governor's Trophy. The bow number for the eight is "6" and the four is "2."
Head of the Charles
The Head of the Charles regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing event. The first race took place Oct. 16, 1965. In its 37-year history, the race has grown into a 21-event regatta which draws over 300,000 fans and over 6,000 athletes from around the world. Head of the Charles on the Internet -- www.hocr.org.
The Forecast
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and a high around 60 degrees for the races on Sunday.
Michigan's Eight to Face World Champion Alums
The three Michigan alumnae -- Kate Johnson (1998-2001), Kate MacKenzie (1997-98) and Bernadette Marten (2001) -- who were part of the USRowing eight that captured the world championhip last month in Seville, Spain, will be racing against the Michigan eight at the Head of the Charles this weekend. It is the second time the Wolverines will face a former teammate in another eight at the Head of the Charles, as Johnson stroked the USRowing eight last year.
Michigan and the Head of the Charles
Michigan has been one of the top crews at the Head of the Charles in each of the last four years. The eight has recorded a top-six finish in each of the last four regattas, while the four has placed out of the top 10 just once in the same time span. Last year the eight finished sixth overall and third among collegiate crews and the four was fourth overall and first among collegiate crews.
A Word About "Head" Races
"Head" races are a class of regattas generally three miles in length where the boats race against themselves and the clock. The boats start approximately 15 seconds apart, and the winners earn the honorary title of "Head of the River."
Head Coach Mark Rothstein
Mark Rothstein is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Michigan rowing team. Rothstein, the only head coach in the program's history, has led the program from its conservative beginning to a second-place finish at the 2001 NCAA Rowing Championships, including a national championship by the second varsity eight. He guided the team to consecutive Big Ten championships (2000, 01) and has been named the Big Ten and Midwest Region Coach of the Year. For his efforts in the 2001 season, he was selected as the National Coach of the Year.
