EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior forward Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) notched her first game-winning goal of the season to help the No. 13 University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 2-0 win at Northwestern this afternoon (Sunday, Oct. 20) at Lakeside Field. Chavez's goal broke a 0-0 deadlock in the 73rd minute and senior forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) added an insurance goal eight minutes later as the Wolverines clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Conference Tournament.

Michigan's second tally came after a strong effort from Crumpton. Collecting the ball along the right flank, Crumpton dribbled past two Wildcat defenders and pushed the ball into the box. The senior forward then put away her 10th goal of the season, shooting the ball into the netting on the far side of the goal.
Junior goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) made three saves in net for her sixth shutout of the season.
The Wolverines close out their Big Ten Conference regular-season schedule with a road contest against Michigan State next Friday (Oct. 25) in East Lansing, Mich. The intrastate battle is slated to begin at 3 p.m.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On getting the win ... "We knew if we could win we could secure a second seed in the Big Ten Tournament, and we also knew that it would be tough since Northwestern has to get a win to get into the tournament. They were playing hard through the whole game and nothing was given to us, that's for sure."
On the game ... "It was a hard-fought game, they were fighting for their spot in Big Tens and we wanted to make sure we finished out our conference schedule in these final games on a strong note. Near the end of the first half, we started to really get some good chances. We hit a few posts. Andrea (Kayal) hit one on a free kick and we were knocking on the door. Unfortunately it took us a while to put that first goal in, but overall we played really well."
On Abby Crumpton's goal ... "Abby just got the ball and had a tremendous individual effort. She probably had three players around her and she was able to beat them and score. She had a lot of just misses this afternoon -- she hit a post as well -- and she had some really nice series in the second half, so it was nice for her to put one away like she did."
N O T E S
The Wolverines earned their eighth all-time win against Northwestern with the 2-0 victory this afternoon. Michigan has also compiled eight wins in the program's series against Ohio State and Indiana.
Abby Crumpton has scored 10 or more goals in three of her four seasons with the Wolverines.
Six of Stephanie Chavez's 17 career goals have been game-winners. She is currently tied for sixth among Michigan's career game-winning goal leaders.
Suzie Grech's six shutouts this season are tied with Carissa Stewart's (1997-2000) 1999 total for the second most in a season in the nine-year history of the program. Grech set the single-season record with 11 shutouts last season (2001).
Grech's 12 wins are also the second best single-season total in school history, equaling her 2001 win total.
