Wolverines Open Season with Victory Over County Rival

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- With 11 event titles the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team opened the 2002-03 season with a 182-115 road victory over host Eastern Michigan University Friday evening (Oct. 25) at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium. The Wolverines touched the wall with the top three spots in the 100-, 200-, 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle races as well as the 200-yard backstroke.

Senior Jeff Hopwood won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events.
Michigan opened the meet with a relay title in the 400-yard medley relay as the team of freshman Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), fifth-year senior All-American Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS), freshman Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and senior All-American Garrett Mangieri (Old Tappan, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) finished nearly five seconds ahead of the second-place team from Eastern Michigan. U-M's foursome touched at 3:21.08 and EMU's team finished in 3:25.98.
The Wolverines swept the top three spots in the next two races. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, sophomore All-American Brendan Neligan (Briarwood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) led the way with a first-place time of 9:15.68. Fellow sophomore Nicholas Douville (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) stopped the clock 0.13 seconds later for second place in 9:28.57 and senior Justin Drake (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia HS) out-touched EMU's Sean Joyce for third, 9:33.19 to 9:33.38.
In the 200-yard freestyle junior All-American Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) posted the first NCAA consideration time of the season for the Maize and Blue at 1:39.13 for first place in the race. Following Michigan's 2002 Male Athlete of the Year into the wall was freshman Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS), who clocked in at 1:40.72, and sophomore Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Trafalger HS), who posted a time of 1:42.17. Freshman Tyler DeBerry (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) finished fourth in 1:43.24.
Hopwood captured two other event titles with wins in the 100- and 200-yard breastrokes. The co-captain finished the 100-yard event one second ahead of Eastern's Bartlet, with a time of 57.22. Hopwood gained more separation in the 200-yard race as he clocked in at 2:04.85, nearly three seconds ahead of Bartlet.
Mangieri also won a pair of individual events as he took the top spot in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Mangieri took the title in the 50 free with top time of 20.94. The senior All-American won the 100-yard event with a time of 46:05. Mangieri was followed by juniors Mike Porth (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Jesuit HS) and Ketchum, who finished in second and third, respectively, with times of 46.96 and 47.10. Michigan senior Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS) took fourth in the race at 47.91.
Leading the way for the divers was junior Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS) in the one-meter springboard with an NCAA zone diving qualifying mark of 304.65. Coben also placed second on the three-meter board with a mark of 255.12.
Other event winners were sophomore Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS) in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:51.11, senior Ryan Earhart (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier HS) in the 200-yard backstroke at 1:50.64, and Vanderkaay in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 4:24.20.
The Wolverines return to the pool next Friday (Nov. 1) when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., for a 6 p.m. meet against host Florida in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium. Last year the Maize and Blue defeated the Gators 137-106 in Canham Natatorium to open the 2001-02 season.
