U-M Battles Regional Foes at ITA Midwest Championship

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team continued its fall season this past weekend (Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 24-27), competing in the Omni Hotels ITA Midwest Regional Championship, hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
Four Wolverines participated in the singles qualifier event. Senior co-captain Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) led the way for U-M, reaching the third round after defeating Wisconsin's Alex Conti (6-3, 6-2) and DePaul's Sam Davidson (6-1, 6-4). Sophomores David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) and Josef Fischer (Nuremberg, Germany/Brandenton Academy, Fla.) also picked up wins in the opening round.
Junior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and sophomore Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) represented the Maize and Blue in the main draw event. Rubin began Saturday by winning a match over Minnesota's Manuel Lievano (6-3, 6-3) before falling to Illinois' No. 52-ranked Michael Calkins, the 2002 Big Ten Conference singles champion, in three sets (5-7, 6-3, 6-2). Jackson took Minnesota's No. 51-ranked Alex Zharinov to three sets before losing 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
In doubles action, the duo of senior co-captain Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) and sophomore Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) lost 8-6 in the third round to Northwestern's Josh Axler and Adam Schaechterle. Rolf and Gossain reached the third round with victories over Indiana's Julian Vulliez and Tom Bagnato (8-5) and Minnesota's Steve Solberg and Eric Robertson [9-8(5)]. Junior Brett Baudinet (Rarotonga, Cook Islands/King's College) teamed with Jackson to split a pair of matches.
U-M will head to Toledo, Ohio, to compete in the Rocket Invitational on Nov. 1-3.
