Michigan Finishes Second at Notre Dame Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team placed second in the 21-team Blue division field at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday (Oct. 4) as the Wolverines had two runners finish in the top 10 on the Notre Dame Golf Course. With 80 points, No. 25-ranked U-M finished runner-up to the nation's top-ranked squad, Stanford, which had the top two individuals and a low score of 33 points. The No. 23 host Fighting Irish were third (118).
For the second consecutive meet, sophomore Nate Brannen (Cambridge, Ontario/Preston HS) led the Maize and Blue harriers across the line. Brannen finished in a team-best 24:38 for seventh place overall. Following on Brannen's heels was freshman Nick Willis (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley HS), who completed the 8,000-meter course in a personal-best 24:34.
Michigan had three other runners finish in the top 25, with team captain Nick Stanko (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt HS) pacing the pack with a 19th-place finish, clocking in at 24:59. Sophomore Tarn Leach (East Jordan, Mich./East Jordan HS) crossed the line two spots behind Stanko, finishing 21st in 25:10. Completing Michigan's scoring quintet was junior/sophomore Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS), who finished 23rd at 25:16.
The Wolverines return to competitive action next Friday (Oct. 11) when they head to Milford, Mich., for the Michigan Intercollegiate at 3:30 p.m.
