PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team participated in the Head of the Ohio on Saturday (Oct. 5), with two boats finishing in second place.
The coxless pair of Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos HS) and Crystal Culp (Fonthill, Ontario/E.L. Crossley) finished with a time of 18:48.5, second to a Boston University pair by 0.1 seconds, and the coxed four of Stesha Carl (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS), Petra Juzwishin (Victoria, B.C./Brentwood College School), Stephanie Shapiro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice HS), Pamela Woll (Fort Wayne, Ind./Kenton HS, Ohio) and coxswain Tara Medina (Mill Bay, B.C./Brentwood College School) finished in 17:23.8, second to Notre Dame by 19.1 seconds.
In addition to Sickler and Culp's pair, Michigan entered three other pairs in the event. The duo of Juzwishin and Sarah Trowbridge (Guilford, Conn./Guilford HS) finished 11th with a time of 19:53.0. The pair of Kate Maxim (St. Helena, S.C./Langley HS) and Cristin McCarty (Saskatoon, Sask./Bishop James Mahoney) was just over five seconds slower, finishing 12th with a time of 19:58.5. Erin Kopicki (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS) and Leah Ketcheson (Belleville, Ontario/Bayside SS) found themselves caught in a buoy for nearly a minute. In addition to the delay, the pair was penalized 30 seconds and finished with an adjusted time of 21:49.4.
The Wolverines entered a boat of eight freshmen and one sophomore in the Youth Eight event. The crew posted a time of 16:37.5, good for third place. The first eight from St. Catherines (Ontario) Rowing Club finished in first place with a time of 15:49.2.
Michigan had three boats in the final event of the day, the Women's Eight. Unlike many schools, the Wolverines boated mixed crews in an effort to place an emphasis on technique and teamwork instead of final standings. One effect of the unfamiliar lineups was the order of finish. U-M's third eight recorded the team's highest finish, posting a seventh-place time of 15:28.7. The second eight finished in 15:34.2 and took ninth place, while the first eight was 12th with a time of 16:05.9. Ohio State's first eight won the event, crossing the finish line in 14:31.1.
The Wolverines have a weekend off before venturing east for the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass. Racing on the Charles River begins at noon on Saturday, Oct. 19, however, the events in which Michigan will compete begin at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20.
