ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team has signed three student-athletes for the 2004 season. Lindsey Bruck (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus HS), Carol McNamara (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) and Sarrie Rubin (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln HS) will enter school as freshmen in the fall of 2003.
Bruck is a member of Penev's Gymnastics in Rochester, N.Y., and has six years of ballet, five years of jazz and one year of tap dance experience. She was second on the uneven bars, third in the floor exercise and tied for second in the all-around at the 2002 Junior Olympic National Championships. The previous year, she was third in the all-around and second on the uneven bars and balance beam at the 2001 Junior Olympic National Championships. Bruck posted her first perfect 10.0 at a USA Gymnastics meet when she performed a perfect routine at the "I Love New York" meet in February 2002. In addition to the balance beam title, she was the all-around and floor exercise champion at the "I Love New York" meet. Bruck was a 1997 Junior Olympic National Team member and qualified for Junior International Elite status in 1999.
"I think Lindsey is going to bring a lot to the program," said head coach Bev Plocki. "She is a very experienced competitor and brings a high level of difficulty in all four events."
McNamara finished sixth on vault, tied for ninth on floor exercise and 17th in the all-around at the 2002 Junior Olympic National Championships. She was a 2001 state and regional champion in the all-around and finished seventh at the national championships. McNamara extends the Wolverines' recruiting success in the state of Minnesota, which includes current U-M freshmen Jennifer Deiley (Dayton, Minn./Elk River HS) and Becca Clauson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), a former teammate of McNamara at TAGS South in Apple Valley, Minn.
"Carol is going to make a tremendous collegiate gymnast," said Plocki. "She still has a lot of learning potential which we can develop with the kind of facilities we have here and good coaching. Carol has a lot of untapped talent."
Rubin was selected as a member of the USA Senior National Team in 2001 and helped the squad to a victory over Belgium in May 2001. She finished 22nd in the all-around at the 2001 U.S. Gymnastics Championships and captured third in the all-around at the 2002 U.S. Challenge in July. She is a two-time Region 6 Level 10 all-around champion (1997, '99) and was a member of the 1997 Level 10 National Team.
"Sarrie is also a very experienced, high-level competitor," said Plocki. "Her strong suits are going to be vault and floor exercise."
Michigan's annual intrasquad meet is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at Cliff Keen Arena. The team opens the 2003 season with a home meet against Ohio State on Jan. 11.
