ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team has signed James Kibbe (Plano, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2003-04 season. Kibbe, a versatile athlete, will join the Wolverines as a breaststroke specialist as well as an individual medley swimmer.
"Kibbe will continue the long line of great breaststrokers we have had here at Michigan, which dates back to Mike Barrowman (1988-91)," said Michigan head coach Jon Urbachek. "We are bringing him to fill the void that will be left with the graduation of fifth-year senior and team co-captain Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS)."
Kibbe was a member of the 2003 USA Swimming National Junior Team and was a 2002 USA Swimming Phillips 66 Spring Nationals champion in the 200-meter breaststroke with a personal-best time of 2:17.43 in Minneapolis, Minn. He has familial ties to the University as his mother, Caroline, was in the Michigan Marching Band during her four years at U-M.
The Wolverines (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten), who posted a 123-120 upset at No. 1 Texas last Friday (Nov. 22), have a week off of competition before they head to Ypsilanti, Mich., to compete in the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, in the Michael H. Jones Natatorium.
