| Turpin (9) and Robinson celebrate after collaborating for the winning goal. |
As Robinson broke to the front of the net, Brown called off the defense in favor of playing the ball himself. Robinson cut in front of the keeper and flipped the ball over his head from just outside the six-yard box and watched as it bounced into the Ohio State goal at 97:53 for a 1-0 Wolverines win.
Freshman goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) kept the Buckeyes off the board with four saves in his longest outing between the pipes for Michigan. The keeper came up big in each half with a pair of stops in the first frame and one in the second half.
Dzubay made his best save of the day at 36:01 in the first half when Ohio State forward Andy Rosenband found himself one-on-one with the keeper. Rosenband controlled the ball 25 yards away from the Michigan goal and dribbled into the 18-yard box where Dzubay left his feet and slid toward the Buckeyes' feet. Dzubay's slide was timed perfectly as Roseband's shot was knocked out of the box and cleared by defender Joe Iding (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic Central HS).
Michigan had a chance with just over one minute remaining in the first half. Junior Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) moved into the offensive flow from his defender position and found open space in front of the goal, six yards out. Taylor took advantage of his 6-5 frame and outjumped the Buckeye defense, sending toward the keeper a header that was snagged out of the mid-air to keep the game scoreless.
The Wolverines travel to Detroit, Mich., for their final road game of the season as the U-M matches up with the Detroit Titans Tuesday (Nov. 5) at 3 p.m. The Michigan owns a 1-0 record against Detroit with a 1-0 win on Elbel Field in 2000, Michigan's inaugural varsity season.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "I think it matches up to the billing -- Michigan vs. Ohio State. It's going to be hard-fought. The talk that we had about this kind of rivalry was that the game's going to be decided by the team that can take advantage of the other's little mistake because both teams are in form at this point in the season. You saw some great chances on both sides that weren't capitalized on. That's a classic battle right there."
On the importance of the win ... "I think everybody knows this was a huge win. We didn't want to put a lot of pressure on to pull something like this out. Obviously, we wanted to get it done earlier in the season but it puts us into a second-place tie in the Big Ten Conference now. The Big Ten Tournament is around the corner and the seeding is almost done, but right now we are focused on the University of Detroit and then Oakland."
On the goal being a lucky bounce ... "Yes, but that's a part of the game. Sometimes you get those breaks when the other team doesn't capitalize early. In the game of soccer, both teams are going to get their moments to score. It's what you do with your moments that decide the game. It's kind of like life. A lot of the times you don't get what you want but you have to keep plugging away at it. This was a great little microcosm of the season and of life right there."
On Peter Dzubay in goal ... "That's what you need especially in a game like this is your goalkeeper to keep you in the game long enough to figure out a way to win it. Going into overtime, it was the players who had put most of the minutes into the game looking the reserves in the eye and saying to them that we'll figure a way to win this. Dzubay did his part by keeping a blank sheet against a very good Ohio State team."
On Knox Cameron leaving for the Under-20 Tournament ... "It's not all about just one person. We're going to miss Knox but Robert Wurth came in late in the game and did a great job adding just that defensive impact and we look for that more often than not now with Knox off the field and Wurth in. I think you're going to see a team that will tighten down defensively. We may lose some of our creativity offensively, but we're finding ways to win games and ways to score goals. Kevin Robinson has found a couple of goals the last few games. Without Knox's presence other guys will have to step up and Robinson did today so that's great."
Junior Forward Kevin Robinson
On the setup preceding his goal ... "I passed it to Mike White and then he passed to Mychal Turpin and then it went up in the air and I just made the run like I'm always supposed to and I got lucky. I actually heard the goalie calling for it so I didn't think their guy saw me so I just went. I knew I only had one touch so I hit it and it went in."
On the importance of the win ... "This is great. We started out with a rough early season and we just kept building and building. The coaches kept positive and it's a big win for the team because we came together and it just feels good."
On the emotion of the game ... "This one is a big one for us because we weren't having a very good season in the win column. But we just kept plugging away and we love winning these big games. It's 1-0 in overtime and it doesn't get any better than this."
Sophomore Forward Knox Cameron
On his last game before the Under-20 Tournament ... "I couldn't ask for a better way to leave. I'm leaving in about four hours and I'm riding high on emotion right now."
On missing the Big Ten Tournament ... "It's definitely bittersweet. I'll miss these guys; they're family. But I also have another job to do and I'm just going to switch focus. I'm only going to switch as soon as I land in Charleston, S.C., because the flight over it will all be Michigan. Once I get there it's the national team."
On the team getting through the Big Ten Tournament and into the NCAA Tournament ... "Coach (Burns) has been stressing all year long that it's not a one- or two-man team with me and Mychal Turpin. It's a great team effort as you saw Kevin Robinson getting the great goal today. I'm sure the guys will come together collectively and get the job done. I'm rooting for them 100 percent."
Freshman Goalkeeper Peter Dzubay
On his kick save in the first half ... "I could tell he was going to go low just from how he was coming on. He was running but he was leaned over so I figured he'd go low, but I thought he was going to my left though. Right when I started to slide I saw him go to the right so I just flung my toe out there and took a deep breath."
N O T E S
Peter Dzubay improved to 5-1 with the victory over Northwestern. The freshman made four saves to earn his third consecutive conference win and fourth straight victory overall.
With the 97:53 minutes of shutout soccer today, Dzubay has held opponents scoreless for 187:55 minutes. The freshman goalkeeper has not allowed a goal since the 71st minute of the 3-2 victory over Wisconsin (Oct. 20).
Kevin Robinson now has two game-winners on the season as each of his goals have given the Wolverines a victory. Robinson's second-half tally against Illinois-Chicago decided the contest last Friday (Oct. 25).
Sophomore Mychal Turpin increased his season point total to 25 with the game-winning assist today, his fifth helper of the year. Turpin has 10 goals and five assists for 25 points in 2002.
The win improves Michigan's record to 2-1 all-time against Ohio State. The Wolverines defeated the then No. 14-ranked Buckeyes 1-0 last year in Columbus.
The win assures Michigan of a tie for second place in the Big Ten standings. At least four teams -- and possibly five -- will end up tied for second at 3-3.
The 1-0 shutout is Michigan's first overtime win since Oct. 29, 2000, when it won 2-1 in double OT at Northwestern. The Wolverines, who are 4-5-2 all-time in overtime contests, had gone 0-3-2 in OT decisions since their last overtime win.
