LaVell Blanchard tallied his 22nd career double-double as he dropped in a team-leading 14 points and grabbed a team-leading 12 rebounds against Western Michigan. Blanchard's 12 rebounds are a season high. His previous high was eight against St. Bonaventure (Nov. 23). Eight of Blanchard's 12 rebounds came on the offensive end.
Blanchard is now 18th on the U-M career scoring list with 1,391 points. He passed John Tidwell, who dropped in 1,386 points from 1959-61.
Bernard Robinson Jr. hit the 800-point mark as he scored 10 points to give him a total of 802 points in his career. He has scored in double digits in all four games this season, including a season-best 14 points against Kansas State (Nov. 25).
Sherrod Harrell's first career block came against WMU late in the first half.
Daniel Horton set a career high in rebounding as he collected five boards. His previous high was three against Kansas State (Nov. 25).
Lester Abram recorded a career-high two steals against Western Michigan.
Both Robinson and Horton picked up a blocked shot against Western Michigan, leaving them tied for the team lead with seven this season.
The Wolverines have started three freshmen in all four games this season. In the starting lineup for the Maize and Blue today were Horton, Abram and Chris Hunter.
Michigan outrebounded its opponent for the first time this season with a 41-36 advantage on the glass. The 41 boards set a season high for the Wolverines, as their previous mark was 38 against Virginia Tech (Nov. 24).
Following the 56-52 loss to Western Michigan, U-M is now 28-6 in home openers at Crisler Arena. The last time the Wolverines dropped their home opener came during the 1998-99 season when they lost 75-64 to Ball State on Nov. 16.
Michigan's 0-4 start to the season ties the school record for early season futility. U-M began the 1933-34 campaign 0-4 en route to a 6-14 overall record.
Over the past two seasons the Wolverines are 1-3 against Mid-American Conference opponents. The lone win came vs. Eastern Michigan (88-58) on Dec. 22, 2001.
Michigan is 25-12 against Western Michigan all-time. It marks the first time that the Broncos defeated the Wolverines in Crisler Arena since Nov. 15, 1997, when WMU earned a 68-63 win. Western has defeated U-M in four of the last six meetings.
